World Food Day 2020: History

World Food Day is an annual celebration in the honour of the founding date of the Food and Agriculture Organization launched by the United Nations in the year 1945. World Food Day 2020 is also marking the 75th anniversary of FAO. The day is celebrated widely with great enthusiasm by several other organizations which are concerned with food security such as the International Fund for Agricultural Development, the World Food Program, and others.

World Food Day is celebrated every year with different themes to focus on areas that require action and offer a common objective. This year the World Food Day 2020 theme is "Grow, nourish, sustain. Together. Our actions are our future".

"World Food Day 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of FAO in an exceptional moment as countries around the world deal with the widespread effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic. It’s a time to look into the future we need to build together," Food and Agriculture of the United nations' official website states.

International School Library Month 2020

 October is International School Library Month (ISLM), an annual celebration of school libraries worldwide. Find ways you can lead the celebration participate and advocate for the importance of school libraries, library professionals, and the students that make them great!

The 2020 theme for ISLM is “Finding Your Way to Good Health and Well Being”.  It is based on one of the UNSDG goals i.e. UN Sustainable Development Goal #3 “Good Health and Well Being”. This year we are inviting participants to think about and celebrate the link between books, reading, school libraries, good health and well being. We have chosen a theme wording that we believe will be accessible to all our participants (aged 3 to 20 years). We are inviting them to celebrate ISLM 2020 by engaging in projects and activities to explore and express this year’s theme.  We hope that ISLM 2020 will be a wonderfully creative, imaginative worldwide celebration of the school library. 

The ISLM team facilitates a number of activities that you might like to participate in as part of the celebration and no doubt you will also have your own ideas for how best to make the most of ISLM in your libraries.  No matter how big or small your school library is please consider getting involved.

ISLM is open to everybody, whether you are a member of IASL or not, so spread the word and start gearing up for a super time for ISLM this October! And remember, you can tell everybody about your ISLM by sending information and photos to our “What People are Doing for ISLM” page.

Digital Bookmark Exchange Project

Match with other schools around the world and exchange homemade bookmarks made by your students. Bookmark exchanges are virtually. 

The following information may be of use in completing your project:

The information in relation to the Bookmark Exchange Project applies equally to the Digital Bookmark Exchange Project, in particular points 2 – 10.

The following additional points relate specifically to the Digital Exchange:

1.    Each student creates his or her individual digital bookmark and all are emailed to the recipient school’s coordinator, or shared via an agreed method.

2.    To economize on paper and ink when printing, the recommended bookmark size is: 2 and a half by 8 and a half inches (6.5 cm x 21.5cm).

3.    Guidelines re-size for printing: if the bookmarks were printed horizontally and the size was 2 and a half by 8 and a half inches (6.5cm x 21.5cm) that would be 4 bookmarks per page.

4.    Using pastels or black and white will save on colour ink when printing. Recipients may wish to have the option of colouring in the bookmarks they receive in which case black and white is recommended.  When you are partnered you can check out whether your partner school would prefer this option. 

5.    When you are assigned your partner/s, partner schools should discuss and agree the best way that suits both for the medium in which bookmarks will be made and the format in which they will be exchanged 

6.    Some options for creating the bookmarks are MS Word, MS Paint etc.

7.    Some options for sharing the bookmarks are Google Drive, Dropbox or a document attached to an email.

151th Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti 2020. Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated annually on 2nd October to commemorate the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. 

From Mohan to Mahatma

The life of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is a story of heroic effort to establish the values of Truth and Non-violence in human life. In pursuing this objective Gandhiji became a Mahatma from a mere ‘Monya’. He became a messenger, for the people of the world surrounded by fire of violence in the twentieth century. He also became ‘The Father of The Nation’. He saved India and Britain from mutual hate and revenge by resorting to the experiment of Truth and Non-violence in India’s struggle for freedom. This created an atmosphere which made it possible for other countries of Asia and Africa to free themselves without bloodshed from the hold of the European countries which had subdued them in the nineteenth century.

Being born in a middle class Vaishnava family and brought up in that atmosphere till he joined school and received instruction according to the system then prevailing, he lived, dressed and dined in the way all children of that class did. Later, he went to England for studies and changed his dress to suit the conditions of that country. But in food and certain other matters, he remained true to the lesson he had learnt early in life. On his return to India after being called to the Bar, he passed through difficult times as all beginners in the profession of the law have to do and it was as a lawyer that he went to South Africa to help a client. He had, however, to spend many years there as the condition of Indians and the treatment they received demanded that he should serve them rather than return to India. His struggle with the authorities brought about a considerable change in his life and by the time he returned to India, he had already become a Mahatma. His dress in India on his return was different from what he used to wear when he was practicing as a Barrister and conformed to the old Kathiawadi type.

If in South Africa it was the Railway Ticket Collector who paved the way for the birth of a Satyagrahi, in India it was a poor peasant from Champaran, Rajkumar Shukla, who provided him a platform to test the power of Satyagraha on the Indian soil. His campaign in favour of the non-co-operation movement brought about another change which identified his outward appearance with that of the humblest and lowliest of the land and he stuck to the loin cloth till he departed with the name of God on his lips.

Mahatma Gandhi was imprisoned several times in his pursuit of non-cooperation and undertook many ‘fasts’ to protest against the oppression of the down trodden in India.

He invented the techniques of mass –civil disobedience in South Africa which were later emulated in India and across the world.

On January 30th, 1948, the assassin’s bullet ended the physical existence of Mahatma Gandhi and made him immortal who left an indelible legacy to the mankind –‘My life is my Message’.

World Food Day Poster contest

World Food Day Poster contest  

Calling out to all children and teens around the world! If you’re between ages 5 to 19, we

want you to use your imagination and create a poster of your favorite food hero at work. 

The world is full of food heroes – from farmers to drivers, shop assistants, food banks or government representatives etc., who despite various challenges, such as the current COVID-19 pandemic, work hard to make sure that food makes its way from farms to our table. Let’s celebrate their great efforts this World Food Day. Young minds can be inspired by our World Food Day Activity Book that talks about the important role food heroes play in the food system and how everyone can come together and take action to support our food heroes so they can provide the healthy diets we need while protecting the planet.

Take a photo or scan your poster and submit your entry by filling out the form on our website. The deadline is 6 November 2020.

Three winners in each age category will be selected by our jury and announced here in December. Winners will be promoted by FAO offices around the world and receive a surprise gift bag and Certificate of Recognition.

To participate, you must be age 5 - 19. The deadline for entries is 6 November 2020.

Who can take part?

The Contest is open to children and youth between the ages of 5 and 19, living anywhere in the world.

The age to declare in the entry form is the one at the time of entering the Contest. Minors must have the permission of their parents or legal guardians to participate in the Contest.

How can I take part?

• Participation is free of charge.
• The entry period will begin at 12:00 (CEST) on Wednesday 1 July 2020 and will close at 12:00 (CEST) on Friday, 6 November 2020.
• The competition is divided into the following categories: 5 to 8, 9 to 12, 13 to 15, and 16 to 19.
• Only one entry should be submitted per person. Multiple entries from one person will result in disqualification.
• Poster entries may be drawn, painted or sketched using pens, pencils, crayons or charcoal,  or using oil, acrylic or watercolour paint, as well as mixed media. Digitally created artwork is also permitted. No photographs are allowed.

Prizes

• 15 posters in each category (60 posters) will be selected for the shortlist by the screening committee in December 2020.  Shortlisted candidates will receive a certificate for this achievement.
• Three winning poster designs will be selected as finalists by a jury in each category.
• The top three poster designs in all categories will be announced on the World Food Day website.
• Winners will be promoted on FAO social media and by FAO offices around the world. 
• Winners will also receive a Certificate of Recognition and a surprise gift bag.

"World Ozone Day:2020 The slogan of the day, ‘Ozone for life’, reminds us that not only is ozone crucial for life on Earth but that we must continue to protect the ozone layer for future generations."

World Ozone Day is observed on September 16, every year. It is celebrated to spread awareness among people about the depletion of the Ozone Layer and search for possible solutions to preserve it. On this day, people from all over the world are expected to join the Montreal protocol to join the talks and seminars. A number of commonly used chemicals have been found to be extremely damaging to the ozone layer.

Life on Earth would not be possible without sunlight. But the energy emanating from the sun would be too much for life on Earth to thrive were it not for the ozone layer. This stratospheric layer shields Earth from most of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation.

The Ozone layer or also known as the Ozone shield, a delicate layer of gas, in the Earth’s stratosphere absorbs most of the Sun’s ultraviolet rays. These rays can cause numerous skin diseases.

World Ozone Day: History

On December 19, 1994, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed September 16 the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, commemorating the date, in 1987, on which the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer was signed.

On September 16, 1987, the United Nations and 45 other countries signed the Montreal Protocol, on substances that deplete the Ozone layer. Every year, this day is celebrated as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone layer.

The purpose of the Montreal Protocol is to protect the Ozone layer by reducing the production of substances that are supposed to be responsible for Ozone layer depletion.

World Ozone Day: Theme

“Ozone for life” is the slogan for World Ozone Day 2020. This year, we celebrate 35 years of global ozone layer protection.

The slogan of the day, “Ozone for life”, reminds us that ozone is crucial for our life on Earth and we must continue to protect the ozone layer for our future generations also.

This year, we celebrate 35 years of the Vienna Convention and 35 years of global ozone layer protection.

What is the Ozone layer?

The Ozone layer is a piece of the atmosphere that has high ozone concentrations. Ozone is a gas that is made of three oxygen atoms O3. Depending on where the ozone layer is, it can either harm life or protect life on Earth.

Most of the ozone stays within the stratosphere whereby it acts as a shield, protecting the surface of the Earth from the harmful ultraviolet radiation of the sun. If this shield was to weaken, we would all be more susceptible to impaired immune systems, cataracts, and skin cancer.

             हिंदी दिवस 14 सितंबर 2020

हर साल हिंदी दिवस 14 सितंबर को मनाया जाता है।  इस दिन ही देवनागरी लिपि में हिंदी को भारत की आधिकारिक भाषा के रूप में अपनाया गया था। साल 1953 में पहली बार हिंदी दिवस का आयोजन हुआ था। तभी से यह सिलसिला बना हुआ है। हिंदी दिवस को मनाने का उद्देश्य हिंदी भाषा की स्थिति और विकास पर मंथन को ध्यान में रखना है। देश में करीब 77 प्रतिशत से भी ज्यादा लोग हिंदी बोलते हैं।

भारत की मुख्य भाषा हिंदी को कब मिली पहचान-

14 सितंबर 1949 को व्यौहार राजेंद्र सिम्हा के 50 वें जन्मदिन पर हिंदी को आधिकारिक भाषा (Official Language) के रूप में अपनाया गया और इसके बाद प्रचार-प्रसार को आगे बढ़ाने के प्रयासों में तेजी आई. भारत के संविधान द्वारा 26 जनवरी 1950 को यह निर्णय लागू किया गया था. भारतीय संविधान के अनुच्छेद 343 (Article 343) के तहत देवनागरी लिपि (Devanagari Script) में लिखी गई हिंदी (120 से अधिक भाषाओं में प्रयुक्त होने वाली लिपि) को आधिकारिक भाषा के रूप में अपनाया गया था. 

सरकारी कार्यालयों और शिक्षण संस्थानों में 15 दिन तक हिंदी पखवाड़ा मनाया जाता है। 14 सितंबर 1949 को संविधान सभा की ओर से हिंदी को आजाद भारत की मुख्य भाषा का दर्जा प्राप्त हुआ था। इसका उल्लेख संविधान के अनुच्छेद 343 (1) में किया गया है। अनुच्छेद के अनुसार भारत की राजभाषा ‘हिंदी’ और लिपि ‘देवनागरी’ है।

क्यों मनाया जाता है हिंदी दिवस-

हिंदी दिवस के मौके पर देशभर के स्कूलों, कॉलेज और शैक्षणिक संस्थानों में कई तरह की प्रतियोगिताओं का आयोजन किया जाता है। हिंदी पूरे विश्व में चौथी सबसे ज्यादा बोली जाने वाली भाषा है। वहीं दूसरी ओर भारत में अन्य कई भाषाएं विलुप्त हो रही हैं। जो चिंतन का विषय है। ऐसे में हिंदी की महत्ता बताने और प्रचार-प्रसार के लिए हिंदी दिवस को मनाया जाता है।

गृह मंत्रालय ने 25 मार्च 2015 के अपने आदेश में हिंदी दिवस पर प्रतिवर्ष दिए जाने वाले दो पुरस्कारों के नाम बदल दिए थे. 1986 में स्थापित इंदिरा गांधी राजभाषा पुरस्कार को बदलकर राजभाषा कीर्ति पुरस्कार’ और राजीव गांधी राष्ट्रीय ज्ञान-विज्ञान मौलिक लेखन पुरस्कार  को बदलकर राजभाषा गौरव पुरस्कार कर दिया गया था.

International Literacy Day 2020: The day spread awareness about the importance of literacy. Therefore, it is necessary to raise the literary issues faced by people across the world. The theme of International Literacy Day 2020 according to the UN is "Literacy teaching and learning in the COVID-19 crisis and beyond." The theme highlights literacy learning from a lifelong learning perspective and therefore focuses on youth and adults.

International Literacy Day 2020: It is observed on 8 September across the globe to promote and support the development of literacy and skills, universal access to quality education, and learning opportunities throughout people’s lives. 

International Literacy Day: History

On 26 October 1966, UNESCO proclaimed 8 September as International Literacy Day to combat worldwide issues of illiteracy. The purpose was not only to combat illiteracy but also to promote literacy as a tool that could empower individuals as well as whole communities. Due to this many people around the globe will get employment opportunities and will improve their lives. Do you know that the idea of an International Literacy Day was born at the World Conference of Ministers of Education on the eradication of illiteracy held in Tehran in 1965? This day was also adopted as the part of UN's sustainable development goals program in 2015. The issue of literacy is a key component of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Importance of International Literacy Day

UNESCO has been central to improve literacy worldwide and that is why promotes International Literacy Day in partnership with governments, charities, local communities, and experts in the field worldwide. By adopting various themes every year wants to turn attention on literacy in all its forms in a changing world. No doubt without literacy we can't make changes in the world and also can't improve our living being.

According to UNESCO "Literacy is the best remedy" which is the key to the right for all to an education. Also, we all know that UNESCO sustainable development goals mobilise efforts to eradicate poverty and inequalities across the world, and improving literacy rates are an integral element.
