Earth Day 2021

Earth Day 22 APRIL, 2021

Every year April 22 is celebrated as Earth day.It is not a public holiday but people pay respect to mother Earth in their own ways with outdoor performances, spreading awareness and presenting acts of service to Earth. Typical activities include planting trees, Cleaning surroundings, conducting various programs for recycling and conservation, and using recyclable containers for snacks and lunches aiming collectively to stop global warming and avoiding environmental destruction.

Earth Day 2021: Theme
The theme for Earth Day 2021 is "Restore Our Earth and it'' focuses on natural processes and emerging green technologies that can restore the world's ecosystems. In this way, the theme rejects the notion that mitigation or adaptation is the only way to address climate change.''
Earth Day 2021: History and significance
Earth Day is observed on April 22 since 1970. The day is commemorated every year to highlight environmental issues like loss of biodiversity, increasing pollution among others. On April 22, 1970, when the first Earth Day was marked, around 10 per cent of the entire United States population — back then around 20 million — took to streets across cities and colleges to protest against the negligence of the environment. The protesters also demanded a new way forward for the planet.
People observe Earth Day by planting trees, cleaning roads, beaches, conducting various programmes to motivate people to adopt ways for sustainable living. Schoolchildren are made aware of the environment and the various hazards it is facing and to make our Earth a sustainable place to live.
On this day we are organising different competitions for the students of KV AFS Jorhat.

WORLD BOOK AND COPYRIGHT DAY, 23rd April 2021

Books: A Window into the World During COVID-19

Now more than ever, at a time when globally most schools are closed and people are having to limit time spent out of their homes, the power of books can be leveraged to combat isolation, to reinforce ties between people, and to expand our horizons, while stimulating our minds and creativity.

During the month of April and all year round, it is critical to take the time to read on your own or with your children. It is a time to celebrate the importance of reading, foster children’s growth as readers, and promote a lifelong love of literature and integration into the world of work.

Celebrating World Book and Copyright Day

Through reading and the celebration of World Book and Copyright Day, we can open ourselves to others despite distance. We can travel thanks to imagination. From April 1st to 23rd, UNESCO is sharing quotes, poems and messages to symbolize the power of books and encourage reading as much as possible. By creating a sense of community through the shared readings and the shared knowledge, readers around the world can connect and mutually help curb loneliness.

In such circumstances, we invite students, teachers, and readers from around the world, as well as the whole book industry and library services, to testify and express their love for reading. We encourage you to share this positive message with others through #StayAtHome and #WorldBookDay.

Background

23 April is a symbolic date for world literature. It is on this date in 1616 that Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. It is also the date of birth or death of other prominent authors, such as Maurice Druon, Haldor K.Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla and Manuel Mejía Vallejo.

It was a natural choice for UNESCO’s General Conference, held in Paris in 1995, to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone, and in particular young people, to discover the pleasure of reading and gain a renewed respect for the irreplaceable contributions of those, who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity. With this in mind, UNESCO created the World Book and Copyright Day. The Day is celebrated by a growing number of partners and since its launch has shown itself to be a great opportunity for reflection and information on a significant theme.

Since 2000, World Book and Copyright Day has inspired another initiative of professional organizations which receives the assistance of UNESCO and backing from States: World Book Capital City. Each year a city is chosen which undertakes to maintain, through its own initiatives, the impetus of the Day’s celebrations until 23 April of the following year. Almost all the regions of the world, in turn, have already been involved in this process, which thus transforms the celebration of books and copyright into a recurrent activity, extending still further the geographical and cultural influence of books.

We are going to celebrate ‘World Book and Copyright Day’ in online mode on 23rd April 2021. The activities will be conducted in online mode only through Library Dept. KV No. 1 AFS Jorhat.

Ambedkar Jayanti 14th April, 2021

Ambedkar Jayanti 14th April, 2021

It is celebrated to mark the birthday of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, an Indian jurist, politician, philosopher, anthropologist, historian and economist who was the principal architect of the Constitution of India.

Dr. Ambedkar was born on 14 April 1891. Born into a poverty, Ambedkar campaigned against the Indian caste system. He became a convert to Buddhism and is seen as a driving force in the surge of converts that saw many thousands of lower caste members become Buddhists.

Ambedkar was the first untouchable of India to pursue a college degree. He earned a law degree and doctorates for his studies in law, economics and political science, gaining a reputation as a scholar and campaigning for political rights and social freedom for the lowest in the caste system, untouchables.

In 1927, Dr. Ambedkar organised and led a march at Mahad, Maharashtra that eventually helped established equal rights for untouchable people who were not allowed to touch or our taste the water of Chawdar Lake.

Dr. Ambedkar died on 6 December 1956 and was posthumously awarded the 'Bharat Ratna', India's highest civilian award, in 1990.

Ambedkar Jayanti is celebrated not just in India but all around the world. Ambedkar struggled for equality throughout his life, hence his birthday is celebrated as 'Equality Day' in India, and the demand to declare this day as "International Equality Day" goes to the United Nations.
